about

Liam Newbery

Above all, Liam Newbery is an avid observer and learner, a human being with an inexhaustible curiosity and passion for life in all its forms. He works as a multidisciplinary artist, moving between sound and image. A drummer, pianist, and guitarist, he is also a producer and a recording, mixing, and mastering engineer, as well as a filmmaker. His practice spans the stage and the studio: he accompanies other artists live, produces and shapes their records, and films, edits, and color-grades music videos. Alongside this, he develops his own work —such as JUPITER or Mi Ley— where all these disciplines converge into a personal voice that does not seek to cling to any particular style or genre, but rather to open up a space for free exploration. He currently lives and works in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

He began playing drums self-taught at the age of 13 in his school band. Then, at 15, he studied the fundamentals of drumming with Sergio Uturbey. Later, at 18, he deepened his studies with Tomás Sainz, who taught him advanced concepts such as improvisation with linear phrasing, stickings, and irregular groupings. At 20 he studied odd meters, rhythmic displacement, and metric modulation with Nacho Amil. He also took occasional lessons with drummers such as Pipi Piazzolla and Joaquín Waiman. He currently continues to study on his own and with his colleagues, and works recording and playing drums live for his own projects and for other artists.

He began studying piano self-taught at the age of 16, and then at 19 he studied with Juan Carlos "Mono" Fontana, with whom he delved into harmonic and rhythmic language. Later, at 24, he studied with Lautaro Moreno, with whom he learned about fingerings and harmonic and melodic language. He currently continues to study on his own and works recording and playing piano live, mainly on personal projects.

He began playing guitar at the age of 6, studying with Gonzalo Terrones. Between the ages of 8 and 12 he gave several live performances as part of the ensembles his teacher organized. Then, between 13 and 16, he continued studying on his own. At 17 he began studying jazz with Ale Demogli, with whom he studied improvisation resources such as arpeggios, scales, voicings, and harmonic analysis. Later, at 20, he studied with Ezequiel Cantero, with whom he later recorded his first album. He also took part in workshops such as Simbiose, with Pedro Martins and Daniel Santiago, and FIMUCA, with Kurt Rosenwinkel and Pedro Martins.

He began teaching himself audio recording, production, mixing, and mastering at the age of 15, experimenting with his own music and that of his friends. He later deepened his knowledge while working on his own music alongside Tomás Boque at Estudio IGA, and afterwards with Ezequiel Cantero and Gonzalo Sueiro at Estudio NAVE. At 23 he studied production with Tomás Sainz. He currently works on the recording, production, mixing, and mastering of his own projects and those of other artists.

At 12 he was given his first camera, and from then on he began experimenting with video and photography. At 14 he made his first formal production with a green screen, handling the directing, filming, and post-production, applying techniques such as chroma-key and color grading in After Effects. Over the years he continued studying, developing personal projects and working for other clients. At 21 he formed the audiovisual production company El Nido together with his friends Augusto Sinesi, Paloma Sesma, and Emi Franji, with which they took on the work of capturing the emerging Río de la Plata music scene across a handful of audiovisual sessions, featuring artists such as Nico Ibarburu, Juampi Di Leone, Cecilia de los Santos, Pilar Fogwill, Kiefa, China Roldán, Tomás Sanguinetti, Malena Rampi, Belén López, Manu Estrach, Seba Tozzola, Lautaro Moreno, Juana Sallies, and Quique Sinesi, among others. In these sessions Liam took on roles such as filming and video post-production, and audio recording, mixing, and mastering. In 2022 the company was selected by the Mecenazgo program of the City of Buenos Aires to produce Deseos Amigos, a music album aimed at continuing to capture the Río de la Plata scene, featuring artists such as Flavio Romero, Quintino Cinalli, Nacho Amil, Manu Estrach, Lara Moure Net, and Eze Burin, among others. Later, at 25, Liam completed the official Blackmagicdesign certification in Color Grading with DaVinci Resolve.
